St. Simons Island Churches

The Lovely Lane Chapel

The Lovely Lane Chapel is an absolutely beautiful church located in the Epworth by the Sea Methodist Conference Center on St. Simons Island, Georgia.  Lovely Lane was built in 1880.  It is still in use today for services, special events, and weddings.

The inside has stained glass, and a beautiful image of Christ as a main focal point.

According to the markers on the church, the name Lovely Lane was given to this chapel after it was purchased by the Methodist group, and remains the name today.  It was a name given to it after the name of the Lovely Lane Chapel built in 1774 and which held the first American Methodist convention.  The original name of this Lovely Lane Chapel was Union Church.

I have witnessed several sermons in this chapel.  There is a very simple and traditional style of sermons and hymns at this church.  I have also witnessed several weddings here.  One of the weddings was actually conducted by a pastor at the First African Baptist Church of St. Simons island, which is evidence that weddings do not have to be in the Methodist denomination here.

If you are visiting St. Simons Island, it is worth visiting this chapel as well as Epworth by the Sea.  You will see other beautiful sights here, such as the Fredrica River, a prayer chapel, historical markers and ruins of an old mill, historical cabins, and there are also turtles to see in a tucked away location beside the gym.  There is also lodging on site.  https://www.epworthbythesea.org/
