St. Simons Island Churches

Our family absolutely loves to explore anything we have not seen before.  We have a fondness for adventure and new perspectives.  In light of this I thought it would be a great time to show you our latest adventure.  Exploring our local churches.

We live in the historic coastal area of Georgia.  If you have an interest in American history you may have come across the story of John and Charles Wesley and their mission work in the early years of American settlement.  They served in areas along the Georgia coast, and our local churches are rich with their influence.  I am offering a very brief summary of their history.  For one, there are books written on the history of these churches, but also; we were not able to enter and ask questions at every location.  However, there are people to contact and they love to tell you about the history of their churches.

We have several churches on St. Simons Island that are well over 100 years old.  Most often tourists love to visit Christ Church shown above.  Christ Church was originally located on the early site of Fort Fredrica, which is one of our National Park destinations.  The Wesley brothers did minister at Christ Church in its original location.  Eventually it was relocated at a new site, within walking distance of the Fort in 1820.  That church was destroyed by a fire during the Civil War, and later rebuilt my a local lumber mill owner.  Fragments of his mill still remain on a site at Epworth by the Sea.

Epworth by the Sea is a Methodist retreat campground featuring many historical buildings on site.  It also has the beautiful Lovely Lane chapel pictured above.  Lovely Lane is smaller than Christ Church, but it is the site of many weddings.  My husband and I were married here, and I highly suggest it for anyone interested in a destination wedding.  Lovely Lane was built in 1880 and is the oldest standing church on the island.

Another historical and beautiful church to visit on St. Simons Island is the First African Baptist Church of St. Simons Island.  We were not able to visit the inside of the church yet, but I have met people who attend church there.  One thing that I can say about this church is that visitors are welcome.  They love for you to see it first hand on Sunday morning by attending their regular services.  The church was first organized in 1859, and it is located close to Christ Church.
